Migrate 3.0.2 to vSphere 4.0 U2

I have purchased new hardware and install a clean instance vshpere 4.0 on the new servers. vCenter has been update to 4.0 as well. What is the best practice to migrate my VM's the vSphere Servers.

Thanks

With 3.0.2 Hosts, your best bet would be to use VMware Converter, or add the VI3 Hosts into the new vCenter inventory and power down the guests and cold migrate to the new Hosts. If your old hosts and new hosts have shared storage, you can power off the VI3 guests, remove from inventory, and add to inventory on your new hosts.

Both the VI3 and Vshpere 4 servers share the same storage. Do you know of VMware has a doc on this?

See http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.pdf

From ESX 3.0.1 is possible to join it to a vCenter 4.x.

So you can use vCenter migrate function to move the VM.

Any reason why you didn't install 4.1 as that's the latest verison.

I agree with @Troy as I would setup a clean new environment with vCenter and the Hosts all there ready to go. Setup a new VM on the new hosts to test everything out before you try and move them over to the new environment. Then use VMware converter from the old to the new hosts since that will upgrade the VMware files so its in the right format and you will be able to power them on.

I already have my VI3 server in a cluster in vCenter 4. Can i just create a new cluster in vCenter and add my vSphere 4 host to the new cluster and use vmotion to migrate the VM's to v4 then upgrade the vmtools and virtual hardware?

yes.

FYI.. all VI3 guests if created on a VI3 Host, would have v4 hardware.
