I am creating a RHEL server VM on a new 4.1 cluster, I point the V DVD to a RHEL 5.5 installation DVD... As the install begins, there is a problem finding a device to install on. I never had a problem like this with earlier versions of ESX... Is there a trick to this... do I need to create special devices to install on?
Are you using an ISO on your computer? Or a burned DVD on your drive?
You can try:
- Copy the ISO onto the ESX datastore and attaching it to the VM cdrom
- Insert the CD on the ESX server directly and attach the host cdrom to the VM
- Try to "Emulate IDE" if you are using a client device, on the VM edit settings.

Sorry, I should have been more clear... I have no problem seeing the cdrom... The rhel installation starts... but when it comes to the point where it tries to chose a disk to install on, it finds none. I have created a virtual disk to install it on but the installation does not see it,
I figure it out myself... I needed to change the SCSI type to LSI versus paravirtual
Aaaaaaahn..... so it is not finding the SCSI device... weird....
You can try changing the SCSI Bus driver from BusLogic to LSI Logic (or vice-versa). Is RHEL 5.5 a new version or an older one? Do you have optional kernels with SCSI support to load when trying to install?
