I've loaded ESXi 4 on a 2GB USB stick and I'm trying to run the update utilities on it to get it patched. The first patch hangs at 45% and if I check the disk space on the partition the patch is writing to it's overcommited (more data on it than space). So the patches never seem to complete.
Am I doing something wrong here? The ESXi installer made several partitions and the root (/) is very small and almost completely full just with the install itself. This doesn't seem to leave room for patching.
I have ESXi 4 isntalled on a couple USB drives. It does take about 5 minutes for the patching to go through, whether its to a host with USB or installed on hard drives. If you are killing it before that time period then I would try it again. Does your USB drive have U3 isntalled on it? If it does remove U3 first and format the drive before using it. Like I said, I havent had any problems running USB. Maybe some more info on your system...white box or other?
The USB stick doesn't have anything on it but ESXI.
The patching took a good while. I just wasn't patient enough I guess.
Reps for you!

Good to hear!!!
The first time I was updating a server, just happened to be a important production server, I was a little nervous because it just hangs at 45%. But, surely enough it always works. Never had a failure. Just takes time for the compile of the firmware and flushing the logs.
