How to install VCenter

I successfully installed ESX on the server and was wondering how and where to install VCenter? Does it get installed on the same sevrer as ESX, and if so, how? I downloaded and burned the vCenter ISO but can't see how to install it from the Unix console. I purchased vShere Essentials Edition. Thanks.

Hello.

It gets installed on a Windows system. It can be a VM running Windows on the ESX host.

Good Luck!

So I can manage other virtual machines from vCenter running on a Virtual Machine? Would it be better to install it on a separate server?

That is for you to decide. It is a supported configuration, but it really comes down to how comfortable you are with the idea of running it in a virtual machine. What size is the environment, how many hosts, etc?

Hi,

You can install vCenter as VM in your Virtualized environment or on physical Machine and as vmroyal said its depend on your needs and plan.

You can check this link for best practice on installing your vCenter 4.0

And also this link for ESX ad vCenter installation guide.

I hope it helps

By the way, are you only using one ESX host right now? You don't particularly need vCenter if you are. You can use VI client to connect directly to a single host and can in fact download the client directly from the host and install that way. There isn't a ton of added value to vCenter unless you've got multiple ESX hosts to manage.
