How to get cursor to work with new vm before Tools installed?

Using Chrome, have web connection to vm and have signed in to the vm.

But I can't get the cursor to work in the vm screen.

The cursor works within the black outer part of the screen with the

Send Ctrl+ALT+Delete button. But does not work with dark blue inner screen

of the vm.  Just using the key board it is impossible to use all of the vm functions for

moving around and deleting opens sub screens.

Have tired all kinds of key combinations but haven't gotten cursor to work.

Or is the cursor not supposed to work on the inner screen of the vm before

installing VMware Tools?

Installing the Remote Console solved my cursor problem

Installing Remote Console:

Go to the VM

From the Summary tab in the VWware vShpere Web Client,

Click on the little gear at the right bottom of the small black screen,

Click on the Install Remote Console option in the drop down list,

This should bring up the VMware download screen for the Remote Console,

you will need to have a sign in to the site (Download VMware vSphere ),

Sign in and download the Remote Console program,

Run the install program and restart your machine.

To run the Remote Console go to the VM,

From the Summary tab in the VWware vShpere Web Client,

Click on the little gear at the right bottom of the small black screen,

Click on the Launch Remote Console option in the drop down list,

Hi,

Any particular reason why you are working with the VM without VMware Tools ?

VMware Tools are necessary for best VM performance. Install VMware Tools and then try working with cursor.

What's the ESXi version and VM OS version ?

Reason: Because I am trying to get to the VMware Tools but using the keys is difficult

and I am having trouble getting to it.  From earlier versions of vSphere Client I thought I recalled using the

cursor to move around and get to things.

Ok. Can you confirm ESXi version and VM OS version ?

Normally, cursor works in VM console but the speed of cursor would be very slow without VMware Tools installed.

Can you try migrating VM to another ESXi host and try working with cursor again ?

I know this problem sometimes. Especially Windows Server 2016 had problems with the cursor in vSphere 6.7. At this point you have to be creative. I use the VMRC and not the Web Console and work with the Windows key combinations to start the vmtools installation process.

Press the windows key to open the start menu, type "cmd" to start the command line, navigate to the CD/DVD drive with "cd" and run the autostart.exe or setup.exe or install.exe. I'm not sure about the name of the installation routine at the moment. But with "dir" you can display the folder content.

If the installation dialog starts in the background, you can navigate to the window with ALT + TAB. And in the installation dialog you can navigate with the cursor keys, Tab and Enter.

At the end you can reboot the system in the command line with "shutdown /r" and after that everything should work as usual.

Hi. Have you tried with VMRC, or opening the VM console with a different browser?

Also, you can mount the VMware Tools drive to the OS and install it from command line VMware Knowledge Base (If you are using windows)

Tried Chrome & IE and did not work on both.

Using key board it is hit or miss on using keys to navigate.

If you accidentally bring up a screen it is difficult to close it with the keys.

If you accidentally bring up a screen it is difficult to close it with the keys.

You can navigate between different windows with ALT+TAB keys. Or you can close windows with ALT+F4.

But you can also try a silent installation:

- Mount the vmtools.iso via the web client

- Open the console with VMRC

- Login as administrator

- Press the windows key on your physical keyboard

- Type "cmd" in the start menu

- Navigate to the attached cd-rom with the command "cd" (change directory). If you only have one harddrive it should be the following command: "cd d:"

- Enter the following command for a silent installation of the VMware tools:

.\setup64.exe /S /v "/qn REBOOT=R"

Using VM from Chrome, however the ALT+TAB keys & ALT+F4 do not work.

Seems like only the TAB and Arrow key are working.

This limits how I can navigate in the VM.

Not familiar with Remote Console but was able to find the download site.

Will try to download and install it.
