Hostd not starting after upgrading from ESX3.5 to 4.0

Hi,

I can't reconnect the ESX server after updating my ESX host from Vcenter (the update stays at 46%). I found that the hostd server dies by himself. Here is the log :

Did the upgrade complete? How did you upgrade it? Can you do a fresh install?

I've seen the update on the console, it seems to end successfully. I did the update using vcenter and the update manager. I did not get a single error.I did it twice to be sure (using the rollback). Each time I got the same problem.

Tomorrow I'll do a fresh install to see if it works, but I have a dozen of ESX Server to upgrade and it would be nice not having to reinstall everything...

Hi Jonas,

Does it just hangs or gives you a purple screen of deadth? Which version was your ESX running ? Is it 3.5 update 4?

Have you tried updating it from a ESX 4 DVD?

Thanks,

only the hostd process hangs, not the entire os. so no PSOD. The update was from the lateste available ESX version with all patches applied.

I did not tried the update using the DVD, 'cause I have to go to the datacenter to do that. I can do it tomorrow.

Is this the process you used?

http://blog.vmpros.nl/2009/08/13/vmware-host-upgrade-utility-4-0-esx-3-01-to-esx-4-0-0/

Are you upgrading to ESX or ESXi ? And are you going from ESX or ESXi ?

I guess, its a known issue in 4.0. Can you please check the hostd logs to see for any error messages like this? you can search for the string "retrieveProductComponents" in hostd.log.

Same problem here with ESX V4.0.0

However, V4.0.0 U1 seems to resolve it
