my current setup is DELL 2900s running with 2 CPu's, have 20 of them, with 32GB memory, ESX 3.02 and ESX 3.5 with VC 2.5. What is the best way to upgrade the existing setup? Will I need to get new hardware for VI4? any suggestions would be highly appreciated. thank you,
I don't believe the HCL has been released for vSphere4 yet so it's hard to say. As for the upgrade. ESX, in my opinion, should be rebuilt, it's a major release. For vCenter you would upgrade the same way as before, just get a good DB backup and perform the install.

Hi,
basically, the process is:
1. upgrade your vCenter server, upgrade your update manager..leverage update manager to update your esx servers and then use update manager to upgrade the vmware tools on the vm's followed by the hardware upgrade of the vm's.
fairly straight forward.

Upgrade guide for vSphere 4.0 will be published when the product goes GA. Please stay tuned for that. In the mean time, vsphere migration prerequisites checklist is a good reference point, see below:
