Expected performance from new Server

If you were to choose between higher CPU clockspeed or more cores, which one will put out more performance ?

I had the choice between a single CPU E5450 server with 16Gigs of ram or a dual CPU E5405 with 16Gig of ram on the same platform.

Which one of this server will give better overall performance under high load and medium load ?

Depends on what you want to do.

If you have MANY vms running and no high end vm which needs huge cpu power among them then you are good with many cores and the cpu speed is not that much important.

On the other hand, if you have lets say, only two vms on a 16gig host requiring huge cpu ammount (eg mathematical calculations) then the more clockspeed is the better.

Thanks for the input, the servers will be running a few VM running the typical domain server apps: file server, dc's, wsus, sms, a few sharepoint servers. Is any of apps consider cpu intensive apps ?

We have exchange & SQL running on a different box right now and might be looking to virtualized those next year as hardware warranty runs out.

alright. Then the more cores the better. CPU speed should not be your main focus.

One last question on the cpu issue........ If your current setup with single E5405 only utilize 50% cpu at maximum load, will you gain any overall performance by installing another E5405 cpu in the server vacant cpu socket ?

my personal rule for that one: if you use more vcpus than pcores another physical cpu wouldn´t be the baddest idea.
