Esxi 5.1 upgrade

Hello All,

We have esxi 5.1 on single server model with 5 VM's running. This server is 3 years old,

The hardware of the server is going to expire, we are ordered new hardware with latest configuration.

Now my question is how to migrate the all the 5 VM's to new host without down time? As this is our first time, so want to know the proper apporach for doing the same.

Thank you in advance

Hello Zamrota,

As your have old hardware, so you have to enable EVC for vMotion, with the same cpu manufacturers

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=100321...

EVC does not allow for migration with vMotion between Intel and AMD processors.

To migrate them without downtime you will have to use VMware Converter.

1. Add the existing ESXi host to new HW with vCenter, shared the datastore

2. Enable EVC mode, do vMotion.

If no shared datastore or vcenter, then you have to have downtime for the change.

Hello Abhilashhb,

Can we use the existing licenses on new host?

The answer you have chosen is wrong. EVC will not come into picture as you do not have a vcenter.

And yes you can use the same license.
