according to the press release somewhere in Q2 09.

VMware vSphere 4 is expected to be generally available later in Q2 2009

Apparently May 21st is when licenses will be available for purchase (http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere/buy/overview.html) but the product itself will not GA until sometime in Q2 2009

Q2 is sometime between Apr 1 and June 30.

So a May 21 release date would be in Q2.

True, though someone did clarify on twitter that the licenses would be available on May 21st. I just took it on the 'buy' page that the product would be available, I could be wrong. It would make senses to get all the licensing stuff cleared up prior to going live, that way user's can download the image and install and hopefully w/o any hassles vs dealing with both installation and licensing on the day it's available.

The only thing that would lead me to believe that it should be available around the 5/21 date is...

If I'm going to spend X amount of $$$ on the products, they better have immediate availability. Enterprises probably won't feel this way as much, but SMB's will.

Someone on Twitter made the point that it would be 5/21 unless QA held it up. Which makes sense, don't want to release buggy code.

Unless they open the beta up I can't imagine too much on the QA front that hasn't already been addressed.

I had an email from a reseller saying they'd be selling licenses from the 21st of May too.
