ESXi 5.1 passthrough problems with HP Smart Array P410 Controller

Hello together,

I have a big problem. I am using a HP StorageWorks Ultrium 1760 SAS and a HP Smart Array P410 Controller. If I enable the passthrough at the ESXI everything looks goog.

Now I configure my vm to get acces to my tape drive but I got an error message

Is there any solution to get this running because if not I am really fucked up.

Just curious to know the purpose of adding Array P410 Controller to VM.

Can you reboot the ESXi host and try?

Also make sure you are selecting the same device while adding to VM.

I need the tape drive at the vm for backup excec and I have added the SAS drive at the controller. Smiley Sad

@suresh HP says that they do not support this feature. Is there any chance to patch a hp esxi version to a normal one? I need my tape drive running Smiley Sad

Even VMware does not support Tape Drive.

You can add the tape drive to a standalone windows server and take a network backup.

I know but a lot of people are using it with vm. And its working. The only problem is to get the controller to the vm and I am looking for a solution.

This pass thru issue started only after esxi 5.1 you can try with lower esxi version like 5.0 and check if that works.

Downgrade is not possible in esxi. You have to reinstall again with lower version.

Do you know if the vms are running under 5.0? So if I backup alle the vms -> reinstall with 5.0 -> put the vms back and start.

okay thanks a lot. I will try it with the HP customized ESXi 5.0 U3 Nov 2014 image. Or should I use the normal image from vmware page? sorry about all the questions

You can use any image.
