ESX4 Upgrade - VMware Tools

I've found the following note in the ESX4 Update 2 release notes, section "Upgrading VMware Tools":

VMware ESX 4.0 Update 2 requires a VMware Tools upgrade.

What is VMware meaning with this statement?

Is this just an information, that new Tools-version is available after this release update?

or is it required to get this Tools-version installed on any existing VMs, before they start working?

Thanks,

Simon

VMware ESX 4.0 Update 2 requires a VMware Tools upgrade.

This is meant for optimal performance and compatibility between the hypervisor and the guest OS.

A guest OS can run without VMware tools as well as older tools (otherwise you wouldn't be able to install any OS)

Best practice is to update to the current VMware tools version after upgrading the hosts.

thanks for your answer.

this was also my opinion, before I read the word "require".

in my understanding, the VMware Tools Upgrade should only be "recommended".

probably I should not worry too much about the acceptation of that single word..

Personally I agree with you, however the update may probably be required when you run into an issue and need support.
