It only sounds good. Working with HP VMware support is like a nightmare. Sloooooooooooow nightmare. I already contacted them on other problem, so I assume it will take a week for them to agree that VMware should be contacted.
And then I will repeat all the steps with VMware support to convince them that my problem is a bug.

Hi,
the same with me an HP Support. It´s realy terrible. They do not have a clue to solve the issue but they do not call vmware.
I do some escalation but it seems that they are not interested in that.

What should be updated first, vCenter??
Or is it okay to update the hosts first and then vCenter??
Is it even better to install a new vCenter server/VM, then update the hosts??
I first want to know if any new issues etc. with U2 before doing any of this etc. so I will watch this thread...
Thank you, Tom
Read the release notes and documentation. It's always recommended to update the managing instance, aka vCenter, first before your hosts.
Also see http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.pdf
Thanks, I forgot about the release notes, I will go look now...
The compatibility etc. link was nice to see, I did not know about it.
I will wait a while to see whether any new issues appear etc.
Thank you, Tom
Just tried a simple test upgrade of vCenter 4.0 U1 to U2 and had the following issues:
1) First time round installer got so far, then rolled back.
2) Second time round, installed fine but then the vCenter Management Web Services service wouldn't start anymore.
Not a good start really is it?
HI,
today I've updated my hosts without any problems.

Stop the vCenter Management Web Services service before upgrading.
Please go through the RN of VC40u2, http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_vc40_u2_rel_notes.html
I don't see anything in the release notes that says I have to stop Web Services before I upgrade.
In any case, the installer actually prompts & tells you that vCenter Server & Web Services are running & should either be stopped or a reboot will be required. I opted for the installer to stop the services for me, which failed, so I did it manually before continuing.
I'm having another go later this week, and I'm going to reboot the vCenter Server prior to starting & then manually stop these 2 services before I actually do the install. Will post how it goes.
Cheers,
Doug.
Three hosts with cisco 1000v vem's installed (not using the 1000v at the moment) but update manager couldn't resolve the conflicts during the update process on one host. Worked with support and after a reboot the host wouldn't boot.
Paved it and installed 4.0U2 using new media. Now I can't readd the host to the existing dvSwitch the other two hosts are a member of. A new support request was opened today directly with VMware.
On a side note - I too agree that working with HP Vmware support is a nightmare. I would recommend letting the software license expire and go directly with vmware if money were no object. What a joke.

Update: Fixed with help of VMware support. Looks like removing the host from the dvSwitch, then the vCenter server - then readd it resolved the issue. I wasn't aware of the first part of that... so now I know. And knowing is half the battle.
On a side note - I opened a sev 2 SR with vmware support online and got a call back within 20 minutes on a Monday. Bravo support!
I updated our test vCenter to U2 without problems. Stopped services manually before I started.
Also I updated one ESXi4.0 U1 host to U2 without any issues. I have a mixed cluster of one host at U1 and the other at U2, all seems ok.
We have a small 3-host cluster.
I changed our original vCenter Server to DHCP, then set up a new VM running vCenter 4.x U2.
That went well.
Subsequent host remediation to U2 also went well.
Finally, VMware Tools upgrades all succeeded.
HTH Tom
