ESX 3.5 Host Upgrade

Hi,

I have a customer looking to upgrade one of his hosts to vsphere 4.

The issue is this host only has local storage.

Will an automatic upgrade deployed from virtual center remove his virtual machines from the single local storage volume?

Hope, here you meant the upgrade using vSphere Update Manager (VUM).. If so, VUM wont remove the VMs during host upgrade.

The chapter "Upgrading Environments Without Host Clusters" from vSphere Upgrade guide will help you in doing standalone host upgrades.

Upgrading when having local storage is no different to when having Networked storage.

Just install VUM and let rip - it is a pretty pain free process.

(Remember VCenter first, Then ESX hosts, Then VM Tools, then VM Hardware)

One day I will virtualise myself . . .

No, but you have downtime during the upgrade.

BTW make a backup of your VM before start the upgrade.
