Disconnecting and Adding a vm to a new esx host

Hi Guys,

I was trying to move a vm from one location to the other following the below steps:

1) VC: 2.5 and ESX 3.5 .

2) Shut down the vm

3) Remove from inventory.

4) Go to VC 4.1 and ESX 4.1

5) Go to the datastore, vm folder, go the vmx and then add to the new inventory (new ESX 4.1)

It throws an error unable to associate the vm..

Is there a solution to the above scenarios or I have to do the below following:

a) Disconnect the ESX 3.5 from VC 2.5

b) Add the ESX 3.5 to VC 4.1

c) Vmotion the VM to the new ESX 4.1

d) Upgrade vm tools.Reboot and shutdown.

e) Upgrade virtual hardware.

Let me know if the 1st option has any solution,

Cheers,

Actually the steps you described should work.

- make sure the VM doesn't have any local hardware attached on the old host

- make sure you have the correct permissions to the datastore

- maybe - but I doubt it - resetting the CPU masks may help (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1011294)

If the above does not help, please attach the VM's vmx file.

You could also try using VMware Converter on the new vCenter environment to import the VM.

Does this happen with other VM's or just this one? A good test would be to build or clone and existing VM other then the one you are currently trying to import, and then try your mentioned method to import this new VM over to vCenter 4.1.

It only gives me the message "vm is inacessible"..No option to power on the virtual machine...

Any thoughts..

I'm not sure where you are at. Were you able to get your VM on to the new vCenter server?

Yes Paul...I got it fixed.. It was the permissions on the NFS which was holding it...

Thanks a lot for all your help..
