Datastore has lost it's host

vSphere Client 4.1.0

vCenter Server 4.1.0

Logged in as Administrator

I have two Datacenters on SAS storage (called "SAS OS" & "SAS Storage") and a third called "Slow Storage" on an adaptec controller, raid5 SATA disks (for large, slower storage)

"Slow Storage" is missing it's host. I can see it in Datastores but I just can't work out how to get it joined back onto it's host.

I only have the one Datacenter and wihtin that just the one Host.

I tried the obvious Inventory>Hosts and clusters   right click "rescan for datastores..." but with no joy.

I am sure there is an "obvious" button hidden somewhere but I just can't see it, sorry.

All help greatfully received.

Cheers,

Stu

if i understand the issue correctly... datastore is not visible on the host.

when you click on the host and click on configuration , then storage  : you do not see the datastore. let me know if i am wrong.

do you the storage under storage adapters... or not.

if you open an ssh ,  then go to cd /vmfs/volumes then do ls ... do you the datastore....

then do an esxcfg-scsidevs -c and let us know the result.

Hi,

Thank you for replying...

Correct Datastore is not visible on the Host.

Click on Host > configuration > Storage and "Slow Storage" not seen.

I think the storage adaptor is there but it dosn;t look like it sees the datastore either.

I have attached Host > Storage View > MAP

you can see "Slow Storage" but doesn;t seem to be connected to anything.

I have also attached DataStore > "Slow Storage" > Performance

so that you can see that it CAN see it...

ssh?

sorry, although I have had this a while I haven't had the time to dedicate to learning more than I need to get a small network running (company taken over and I have many roles).

Cheers,

Stu

Hi,

SSH report attached

Means nothing to me.

There's one there with no name...

Then the next one only sees two lots of disks...

it's raid 5.. it can;t have disapeared. unless the Adaptec controller has died.. but then I can sort of Browse to it (but it says it's empty) and it can sort of read it...?!?!?

again, all replies greatly received... Cheers, Stu

The datastore is inaccessible.

esxcfg-scsidevs -m ( will show the mounted devices on the host)

then go ahead and find out the device id whether the lun is present or not.

esxcfg-scsidevs -l ( will give the information about the devices )

once you have the naa id of the lun , go ahead and find whether the partition table is present or not.

fdisk -lu /vmfs/devices/disks/devid

also check whether the lun is being refered as a snapshot lun.

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=snapshot%20lun%20vmware&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CCcQFjAB&url=htt...

Also .. look into the logs of messages (esxi) vmkernel or hostd (esx)

Sorry it would have been better in case of a remote session Smiley Sad

Thank you...

I think (from the info attached) that you are right, it can't see Adaptec controller and the SATA raid 5 array "slow storage"...

I can only guess the adaptec controller has died.

(tell me if you think I am barking up the wrong tree)...

I'm on site tomorrow, so I'de best get my screw driver out and have a look...

(might have a controller I can swap from another machine to check)

Cheers for the help..
