Cannot Import Upgrade Release

When I try to import "pre-upgrade-from-ESX4.0-to-4.1.0-0.0.260247-release.zip" I get the message Failed to import data. Cannot verify checksum for imported upgrade file.

When I try to import "upgrade-from-ESX4.0-to-4.1.0-0.0.260247-release.zip", it actually imports the file, does some processing, and then says The uploaded upgrade package is not a valid package.

Fact: I know they are valid packages, I downloaded multiple copies.

Fact: I am running vCentre 4.1 and Update Manager 4.1 on a new server.

For some reason "upgrade-from-ESXi4.0-to-4.1.0-0.0.260247-release.zip" does import sucessfully, but just not the other two.

Have you checked consistency of downloaded package? Have you checked if checksum is correct?

Hi Ken,

You do not need to use pre-upgrade bundle while upgrading the ESX 4.0 Hosts to ESX 4.1 using Update Manager. Pre-upgrade bundle is required only while using command line tools.

Thanks,

Sukumar.

I'm getting the same issue as KenMC.

MD5 verified and exact same error.

Running Windows 2008R2 Standard Server with a clean install, and a fresh install of vCenter 4.1 and Update Manager 4.1

I've contacted VMWare support and they are scratching their heads too.

I'll report back if and when they figure it out Smiley Happy

I had the same issue. So did Mike at RTFM.

Seems like importing the pre-upgrade p[ackage is a common problem.

Hi Rob

For me it's not the pre-upgrade package that won't import it is the actual ESX 4 to 4.1 package that won't import. VMWare have been quiet on this since Friday so I need to get an update as to where they are at with it all.

VMWare Tech support did resolved it for me last week. But we basically had to blow away the repository and start with a new one. Uninstall Update manager on your virtual center server and reinstall. Fixed.

Colonel,

You can do the whole shebang with esxupdate from the command-line, which is how I ended up doing mine after Update Manager went out to lunch.

Here's the steps, and they assume you have sudo configured for administration.

1. Put host in maintenance mode

2. Use WinSCP to copy both ZIP files to the /tmp/ folder on the host

3. install pre-relase patch

sudo esxupdate update --bundle=/tmp/pre-upgrade-from-ESX4.0-to-4.1.0-0.0.260247-release.zip

4. install upgrade

sudo esxupdate update --bundle=/tmp/upgrade-from-ESX4.0-to-4.1.0-0.0.260247-release.zip

We had Udpate 2 installed, and on all of my hosts, the rpm listed below would not remove correctly, so I had to remove it manually.

5. remove RPM that won't remove, the first command verifies it is still installed

sudo rpm -q vmware-esx-apps-4.0.0-2.17.261974

sudo rpm -e vmware-esx-apps-4.0.0-2.17.261974

6. reboot

sudo reboot

7. after reboot, check version

sudo vmware -v

I hope this helps!

I downloaded the patches through the regualar download link for vSphere.

Select Products --> vSphere --> vSphere 4.1.

There is no seperate section for patches.

You must be logged-in with an account that has access to your company's licensed products.

If you can't find it this way, contact support for help.
