Beginner to VMWARE

Hi everyone,

I am very new to the the vmware community and how it works. I am wondering if there are any documents online or videos that may help me in my journey. I am attending a vmware class that is paid for my company but I just want to brush up on the basics of this. Any help will do. Thanks!!!

Joel

Thanks for looking at VMware there is a TON of VMware specific information and help available to you. Some here in the Communiites, some on the web, some on twitter search using hastag #vmware

One great place to go for links on finding information is here: http://vlp.vsphere-land.com It has links for LOTS of things for anything you need including the VMware documentation links on the right. To ton's of blogs out there etc. So check it out!

If you want to start reading before the class check out the documentation. Get a trial copy of VMware Workstation or ESX/ESXi Server and try setting up / installing a host on physical hardware or even right in VMware Workstation as that also supports installing ESX hosts for testing. Then finally if you have questions, stop back here on the VMware communities or even create a Twitter Account and post your question along with #vmware and you'll get responses that way as well.

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forums.

One of the best free resources available is the online documentation. VMware produces very good documentation for its products. What specific class are you attending, as that info might help direct better resources to you?

Good Luck!

Like you, I'm new.

VMware offers a free online course - Workstatiojn 7.0 Fundamentals - that I signed up for. Watched the first 2 modules this morning and it was enlightening for me. But I'm a real NOOOOB

As Troy mentions it is indeed a great course. However, the course covers a lot of material in a short time. If you take the course with no prior knowledge of VMware, it will go by extremely fast and it will be hard to keep up. To get the most out of the course, you should read some of the docs in Troy's link, or read a book on vSphere. A great one is Mastering VMware vSphere by Scott Lowe, published by Sybex.

As Troy said, yes that is a great class. Any prep work you can do around reading the product documentation or even installing the products and playing around with them would be very helpful. This will allow you to go to class with a bit of a head start, and will help some of the detailed content make more sense.
