Are you installing ESXi directly onto the laptop or into a VM?

If directly on the laptop, have you checked the compatibility list for your NIC type? VMware Compatibility Guide - I/O Device Search

Hi there!

It's possible that your current NIC is not compatible with ESXi. Remember that it needs at least a gigabit NIC: ESXi Hardware Requirements

Maybe adding an external NIC will solve your problem. Also, try installing ESXi from VMware Workstation. It virtualizes a NIC that might be compatible.

Please let me know how it goes
