You must use vCenter 4.1 to manage 4.1 hosts. vCenter 4.1 can manage 4.0 hosts.
but upgrading vcenter to 4.1 will break view composer right?
Yes, you will have to wait for View 4.5 in this case.

Note that also with 4.0 U2 you have some issue with View (that is shipped with U1):
