2 Contradictions Found , pls advise

Hi Guys

Refer to the attached 2 documents from Vmware.

1- Checklist

2- Upgrade Guide.

Contradiction 1: ( DSN )

Pg 3 of Checklist saying " Use 32 bit DSN" and Pg 38 of Upgrade Guide saying " 64 bit"

Contradiction 2: ( VM hardware Upgrade)

Pg 6 of checklist saying " Unless u create snapshot u cannot reverse back" , pg 81 of upgrade guide saying " the upgrade is irreversible, even if you

take a virtual machine backup or snapshot before performing the upgrade

I am more concerned about hardware upgrade, which one to follow ? would snapshot would help ?

thanks

1) Regarding DSN

You have to create 32bit DSN for update manager and  64bit for vCenter server.

2) Regarding VM Hardware upgrade

Below are the list of VM Hardware version that is created by respective ESX release.

ESX2.5x - VM Hardware 3

ESX3.x - VM Hardware 4

ESX4.x - VM Hardware 7

If you upgrade the VM Hardware from 3 to 7, even though you have snapshot or back up it wont be support to revert the VM Hardware back to 3

But if you upgrade the VM Hardware from 4 to 7,  snapshot or back up are supported to revert/reversible  back the VM Hardware to 4.

Thanks

64bit DSN is for vCenter 4.1, as it is a 64bit app.  the 32bit DSN is for VUM, which is a 32bit app.

Pg 6 of checklist saying " Unless u create snapshot u cannot reverse back" , pg 81 of upgrade guide saying " the upgrade is irreversible, even if you

take a virtual machine backup or snapshot before performing the upgrade

As I didn't read the guides, if this is referring to virtual hardware and guest tools, a snapshot is a good choice, as it is reversible.

Pg 3 of Checklist saying " Use 32 bit DSN" and Pg 38 of Upgrade Guide saying " 64 bit"

VC 4.0 and previous is 32-bit DSN.

VC 4.1  is 64-bit DSN (64-bit is required)

" the upgrade is irreversible, even if you

take a virtual machine backup or snapshot before performing the upgrade

The upgrade is irreversible because of the schema changes in the database, so you can revert.. but you would have to start over with a NEW database.

Here upgrade refers to VM hardware upgrade not database .

upgrade guide says " Hardware upgrade is irreversible no matter u take snapshot or not " whilst checklist says " snapshot can reverse the hw upg back to original "
