I have just taken over our virtual environment and I am trying to figure out the way of the world. I come from a Microsoft background so i am always leary of updating my hosts as soon as patches come out. In update manager it says there are 29 missing, 3 in conflict, 24 not applicable, 22 obsoleted by host, 14 new module. Will Update manager only patch what is applicable to my system? When it says 3 in conflict what exactly does that mean? Does 14 new module mean what will actually be installed?
Update Manager will apply only the patches that are applicable, those marked missing, on your system.
The patches that are marked "in conflict" most of the time mean that you will not be able to apply them all to your system.
A good example is the ESXi firmware. ESXi 4 firmware update from 01/04/2010 and ESXi 4 firmware update from 27/05/2010 will be marked as being "in conflict".
Another example of this type of patches are the Cisco Nexus 1000V modules.
Not all modules marked as "new" will be installed.
Suppose you don't have the Cisco Nexus 1000V installed on your system then all patches that install a version of the Cisco Nexus 1000V will be marked as " new".
If you install a specific version of the Cisco Nexus 1000V then all the other Cisco Nexus 1000V modules will be marked as "obsolete" (older versions) or "in conflict"/"missing" (newer version).

Thank you for your response. So basically it will not install anything in conflict or anything that is not applicable to my system? So when i see updates being downloaded should i be going through each one individually to make sure they go with my system or assume that they are good to go?
The downloaded patches are good to go. Update Manager resolves all conflicts for you.
And from my experience I never saw that fail.
