vswp, vmdk or vmsd files left behind on datastore after VM deleted from disk?

Are there any scenarios when VMware will be failing to completely delete VM from the disk, meaning even though VM is successfully deleted in vSphere, VM directory is left behind on datastore with some random VM files?

Most times I see files with extension .vswp, .vmsd , .vmdk or <vmname>-aux.xml left behind on datastore with their parent VM directories.

I have not observed this any time. I delete at-least 1-2 VMs on daily basis. What version of ESXi & VC (if any) you are using?

It happens very randomly and intermittently. I have not been able to find root cause. I have seen this more frequently on esx 5.1 and occasionally on vSphere 5.5 as well.
