lost virtual machine

hi,this is not q question properly, its a situation, tha i have in the past, and i want to know if i was the only one,

once upon a time, i try to clone a running virtual machine, that fails in some point.

after that fail, i power off the VM, when i try to power on again, was another error, i look , and one of the solutions, was to remove VM from inventory, and add it again.

i remove,

when i go to storage, and try to find the VM , !!! i cant find it, was lost, desapear....puff.!!!

after a moment of panic, i log to an esx server with a ssh client, and make and extensive search in storage connected to the ESX, and sorprise, it was like 5 virtual machines with the VM name.00000001,0000000002, etc.

i take the older version, copied with the vsphere client to the storage again....add it to the inventory, and everything was ok again...

i think its rare.

happend to someone else??

Hi,

This happens when the clone or backup job fails and the snapshots are not automatically deleted. In this scenario the snapshots that were created during a clone or backup job remains with the VM. Any new data that is written to the VM is written on the snapshot file. Its important that you chose the latest snapshot file to maintain data consistency.

In your case you have multiple snapshots because you may have had failed backup or clone jobs in the past. You did the right thing while registering the vm but now I would consolidate the snapshots first and would then troubleshoot the failed clone issue.

It might have been a one time  user error - The two command Remove From Inventory and Delete from Disk are right next to each other - Remove From Inventory removes the VM form the vCenter inventory while Delete From Disk deletes all the files form the disk - and do not despair we have all done this are least once -

Now I am not sure what those other files unless someone had cloned the VM or they were created by the storage system -

im pretty sure i just remove from inventory, no delete, it just q rare situation, things that happend to me in some pint and i always think , that just happend to me, for some reason , usually i think that its my fault, but in the particular case, i think it was something rareee.
