iscsi initiator help

I am trying to create a lun to move the virts i have on the physical, i have the lun created on the iomega. I am just starting to learn and bought equipment to setup a home lab and run vpshere, I downloaded a trial copy and things are going well.

hardware

switch cisco 3560 24 g

dell PE 2900 172.15.6.103

1 quad core cpu

8 gigs memory

160 storage

iomega 1x4 200d 172.15.6.108

1,900 tb lun

i have the follwoing setup under networking

vmkernel 172.15.6.99

service console 172.15.6.104

virt switch

  1. ports 120

prom mode reject

mac change accept

forged tx acept

I am using vmnic0

i go into storage adapters and click ISCSI soft adapter then properties, and it shows status of enabled.

under the iscsi properties it is empty, under dynamic discovery tab the add option is greyed out. What am i missing?

I have googled this for about a day and half but have had no luck any suggestions would be really greatful. yes i bought sme books and dvds to learn, i plan on going to a boot camp or something similiar once done to polish up for the test.

Have you set up a vSwitch with a port group allowing iSCSI traffic? Have you configured the iomega device to accept iSCSI traffic from the host server?

Do you only have the onboard (one?) NIC on the host or do you have additional ports? If more than one NIC, then set up at least one for iSCSI traffic... You'll also have to configure the iomega device to accept communications from the host and (possibly) configure it to allow root level access (from the ESXi host)...

I would suggest setting up a separate VLAN on your switch for the iSCSI traffic to route through. Then set up the vSwitch on the host (connecting the NIC in the vSwitch to that VLAN) to communicate on that VLAN...

Step 1

Create a VM kernel port that connects to your VMnic. If you already have a vswitch connected you can use that one or if you have another physical nic use that. A physical nic can only be connected to 1 vswitch. After you connect it to the vmkernel port you should then bbe able to setup your Iscsi adapter under storage adapters.

You are also going to need to expose the Lun you want to connect to on your iomega. Once that is done you can dynamicaly search for the Lun (easiest method) by putting in the IP address.

These are basic instructions. VMWARE has all the info you need. Search Iscsi setup and so on. I would post it here for you but I am on a shared connection out to sea and its at about 6Kbps to my box.......

Also make sure you expose the Lun properly on the Iomega or you will never connect to it. It is tricky and will take you a while to figure out but once you get it, it seems simple.

OK guys here is the strange part, I lost power and the server shut off. I powered it back on and the iscsi simply works now. I did the rescan and it showed up I have 4 virts running on it. Sorry do not know how else to explain it but it simply works, thanks for all your help. I do not want to shaft anyone here what would be the best way to give points here?
