how to remove the extented lun from a vmfs datastore.

we are having vsphere 4.0 & VC 4.0 . i increased the datastore which has size of 100 GB to 200 GB by adding a another LUN of 100 GB to that datastore. now the datastore has two 100 GB LUN. the below details provides that volume(datastore) information.

Vspher4.0#vmkfstools -P /vmfs/volumes/4c63cef0-fb265971-13b9-001a645d49e6

VMFS-3.33 file system spanning 2 partitions.

File system label (if any): test

Mode: public

Capacity 428959858688 (409088 file blocks * 1048576), 409041108992 (390092 blocks) avail

UUID: 4c63cef0-fb265971-13b9-001a645d49e6

Partitions spanned (on "lvm"):

naa.6006016000b22800a6b05227fda5df11:1

naa.6006016048b12800f05d170aa3c0df11:1

now i want to remove the LUN(naa.6006016048b12800f05d170aa3c0df11:1) which i added later . vm's are in

LUN1(naa.6006016000b22800a6b05227fda5df11:1). is there is any procedure to remove the extented LUN.i.e i want to remove the lun which i added. i dont want to delete that datastore(200gb) and create a new two 100 GB datastore.

AFAIK there is no way to do this, at least no supported way.

You will have to create an additional 100GB datastore, relocate/migrate the current VM's from the extended datastore to the new one and delete the old datastore.

Best way is to move the data of the datastore and then you can remove it and create a new 100gb lun and add it back.

You can not remove the other LUN, since there is only one filesystem (metadata) which is located on the first disk and you can not really know where your VMDK files really are - they could be only on the first LUN, only at the second LUN or even partly on the first and second. It would not be possible to do this safe. Unfortunaly you will have to move everything away, destroy the datastore and then recreate it.

(If you have no other LUN to move your files to, you could possible temporarely move them to local storage during the creation of the new datastore. No HA, DRS during the time of course.)
