XIV Snapshot mount VMDK to VM.

Hi, hope someone can help, or hope this is possible.

I have a vSphere 4.1 environment connected to a IBM XIV.

So what I would like to achieve.

I have two SQL Server VM's: VMPROD and VMDEV running in a DRS/HA cluster.

Lets say VMPROD has a D drive containing both the MDF and LDF of our SQL DB. This D drive is a VMDK file residing on Datastore1.

I would like to once a week / day perform the following:

  • Shutdown SQL Services.
  • Make a SAN Level snapshot of Datastore1 call it snapDatastore1.
  • Assign the snapDatastore1 to the VMware cluster.
  • Mount the vmdk file on VMDEV.

This way I would have a point in time copy of our SQL db on our VMDEV server. We will not be writing to this copy, only reading from it.

Is this possible and how would one go about doing this? Dont worry about the SQL side of things will figure that out as we go. But would like to this automatically.
