Unmap on server 2012 r2 guest

I have a guest that is running server 2012 r2 and I just upgraded the hardware version to 6.7u2 version 15 to support unmap commands from the guest. This machine was on esxi 5.0 version 8 compatibility mode before the upgrade. The disks presented to the VM are thin provisioned and I don't observe these shrinking when moving large files, (terabytes), onto another volume. The controllers are LSI SAS and from research this may need to be on pvscsi adapters to support the unmap? Can someone confirm this and if so, is it safe to change the controller type from LSI to PVSCSI? The article that I have read on changing this is here. https://www.vladan.fr/safely-change-lsi-logic-sas-vmware-paravirtual/

Thanks!
