SMVI 2.0 Single file level restore workaround for Linux

We have recently implement a new vSphere 4 environment with Netapp 3170 as the central storage utilizing SMVI 2.0. Although SMVI 2.0 already added single file level restore option, it won't work for Linux. Is there any workaround for us to implement single file level restore on Linux? or anyone got any good trick about this? I've found some old workaround on the net, but it's dated 2007 which is for old SMVI version with complex procedure. Is there any newer way of doing so?

Hi,

I am afraid in Linux environment you still have to stick to the old-school way of single file restore:

http://www.netapp.com/us/library/technical-reports/tr-3737.html

page 17:

"In addition to backup verification, mounting a backup provides a way to restore a single file from within a virtual machine on a case-by-case basis. This is performed by attaching a VMDK from within the mounted backup as an existing hard drive to a virtual machine in VirtualCenter."

Although the doc is about SMVI 1.0, all the steps detailed there are applicable to SMVI 2.0 as well.

Regards,

Radek
