SAN LUN Block Size vs VMFS Block Size

Hello All,

I have searched a bit and have read some of the documents about VMFS block sizes and alignment. However, I am still a bit confused. I think I get the concept of aligning vmfs partitions and how block size affects max vmdk/filesize on a partition. When creating new virtual disks and luns on my SAN, though, I can choose different block sizes there, as well.

Should i choose same block size when creating a SAN LUN as the VMFS partition that will reside on it? There is also 'stripe height' and I wonder how that might affect things. The default is 64k, which I have been using.

Thanks much

Have a look at:

Block cannot have te same size, cause VMFS use big block (not available at storage level).

VMWare should be paying you, Andre. You are such a big help. Thanks for the reply.

I had seen that document, but was still unsure. However, your post makes sense since VMFS has such huge block size...
