NFS : performance and availability

Hi,

I have to setup a NFS storage to a customer.

Here is the hardware configuration :

- NetApp NAS 3210 with 4 NICS

- 2 independant physical switches (HP ?) with NO stack

- ESXi 4.1 with 6 vmnic

I could dedicate 3 vmnic to storage. What could be the best configuration to meet performance and high availability ?

I thought I could trunk 2 vmnic on one physical switch (ip hash) as active adapters and 1 vmnic on the other physical switch as standby adapter. Is it a good configuration ? And how should the NAS be connected ?

Thank you.

Hello.

Definitely check out NetApp's TR-3428.  It should be your guide for all of this.

Good Luck!

IP-Hash combined with active/standby NICs is not a idea. Always run active/active with IP-Hash / Etherchannels. Take a look at the document referred to above, it has all the info you will need to design a rock solid environment for your NetApp filer.

OK, thank you we will finally not use IP hash because of the switches not being stacked.

Instead 2 vmnic will be used.
