Issue with shrinking drive

I am on vmware 6.7 and Windows 2012 R2.

Made mistake in my lab environment trying to shrink Drive C: from 80GB to 78GB.

Instead of shrinking the 80GB drive I extended the wrong drive VIPDEV1 which was 1gb and now it is 18GB.

I tried to shrink it back to 12GB which it did but would not go any smaller.

Since that was done now VM will not boot. I get Module MonitorLoop power on failed.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I can restore from back up but I want to learn from mistakes and see if this could be fixed.

If possible please provide link on how to properly shrink the volume. Thanks.

How exactly did you do that ?

The screenshot still lists it as 18 GB ....

Anyway - if it is really necessary you can cut vmdks with a dd command.

But that is only safe if you have not expanded the partition inside the vmdk yet.

I used -X 12G command to shrink it to 12G it now shows at 12G but I am unable to shrink it any lower than that.

If I use 10G it would throw an error as it shows in first image. I believe I am not doing it right.

It used to be 1G size originally. I have not used Windows shrink. there are no snapshots.

It appears to be correct that I am low on space and that is probably the reason for VM not starting.

Is there anyway to save it?

What is the proper way to shrink the volume? please provide steps and process or links?
