Increasing ESXi datastore size after increasing LUN size

Hi all,

Scenario is this.

Remote site with 2 Dell r710 ESXi 4.1 servers, 1 Dell MD3200i SAN with 12 600GB disks.

Originally when i set up the SAN i created 2 LUN's with 1TB in each LUN.

We've now ran into a situation where we have 1 server which is now needing more than 1TB of sapce on it.

I've reconfigured the array and now have a LUN that i increased to 2TB from 1TB and i now need to increase the datastore on the ESX server.

If i increase the size will it format the entire LUN or just the free space i create???

I don't want to delete any exisitng VM's on the SAN.

maximum size of a vmfs is 2TB-512B only. extend would not format the LUN. look at this blog post: http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2009/03/26/resizing-your-vmfs-the-right-way-exploring-the-next-version-...

Brilliant thanks.

Thats the way i was looking at doing it just didn't want to hit the finish button without double checking.

you took the right approach going to 2TB would make your vmfs unaccessible. 😃
