IO Access Pattern when suspending and/or resuming Virtual Machines

I was always under the assumption that when you Suspend or Power on a Suspended machine(s) the underlying storage appliance (VMFS/NFS) sees it as sequential and not random.

  • Is this indeed the case?
  • Is it still true when many are performed at the same time?
  • Is there a way to check from the VMware side?
  • Does anyone know how to check it on Netapp?

This is important information for me as the VMDK files is on a different storage altogether from the snapshot files (vmdk-delta) and the vmem/vmss files are also on a completely different storage.

Would like to put those suspended state files on a storage that does not need SSD as it has little gain over NL  SAS disks when it comes to sequential access pattern.

Thanks.
