Help Testing NFS vs SAN Datastore

My group is finally going to be moving away from local storage to network storage (NFS or SAN) on our ESXi boxes.  I've setup two datastores one NFS & the other SAN for testing.  I've installed a VM on each datastore, but I'm not sure how to really test the datastores to see which one better fit our environment.

Any recommendations on how to decide between the two, or stress tests would be greatly appreciated.  FYI all our networked storage is NetApp appliances.

I know your post was over a month ago, but I was wondering if you're still looking at SAN vs. NAS performance on your NetApp system.

I would definitely recommend running representative workloads on both datastores and then looking at perfstat output from your NetApp system.

Can you give me a more detailed description of your NetApp filers?  How are they connected on the NAS side (e.g. 1 GbE vs. 10 GbE)?  Do you have Flash caches in your controllers?
