Esxi 5 to utilize all of my Raid5 disk space

I cannot get all of my Raid Volume space to show up with the max usable space in my VM

  • I have a dedicated 2 TB drive hosting my VM's running on a SATA3 port, no isuues with this (as Datastore1)
  • I then have a Raid 5 volume (4 x 2TB Hdd's) = 5.4TB using an Intel RS2BL080 Raid controller. to be used for data only
    • I have tried this in both writeback with BBU (prefered) and write through
  • Creating a Datastore2, shows up as 5.4TB, so far so good

  • I then create a hard drive which will not allow me to create a drive over 2TB.(Is this correct practice to assign space to the VM?)

Some forums suggest upto 64TB, yet I just cannot find a way to achieve that.  Any help will greatly be appreciated....

With vSphere5, VMFS Datastore size has been increased to 64TB. However, the virtual disk is still limited to 2TB-512bytes. More info on config. maximums with vSphere 5: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere5/r50/vsphere-50-configuration-maximums.pdf

If you have a need to create a virtual disk greater than 2TB, you can assign it as an RDM in physical compatibility mode (64TB max.)

Welcome to the Community..

In VMFS 5 - Maximum Virtual Disk size is limited to 2TB-512 bytes

You have to got Passthrough RDMs which supported  ~60TB in size and NON-Passthorugh are also limited to 2TB-512 Bytes
