From a performance standpoint there is no real difference in the block size you use. From a disk waste perspective, there could be more wasted space when using 8MB block sizes.
BP is to use the block size that matches the largest VMDK you will use on the VMFS volume.

All depends on the size of the virtual disk you are going to create - if you know your will not be creating virtual disks larger that 256 GB use 1 MB -

There is no best practice - think about biggest VMDK you want to create on this datastore and choose block level accordingly.
