Disk/LUN Formatting

Jump to solution

Hi

What is the best practice for Disk/LUN formatting for VMFS. Currently I have a 1.6T FSCSI storage. The options for Disk/lun formatting are

256 GB, Block size 1mb

512 GB, Block size 2mb

1024 GB, Block size 4mb

2048 GB, Block size 8mb

From a performance standpoint there is no real difference in the block size you use. From a disk waste perspective, there could be more wasted space when using 8MB block sizes.

BP is to use the block size that matches the largest VMDK you will use on the VMFS volume.

All depends on the size of the virtual disk you are going to create - if you know your will not be creating virtual disks larger that 256 GB use 1 MB -

There is no best practice - think about biggest VMDK you want to create on this datastore and choose block level accordingly.
