Delete a VMFS data store or Unmount and detach

All,

I need your assistance in this matter. I have 55 VMFS 3 datastores which I want to upgrade to VMFS5. I want to take advantage of the 1mb block size so I need to delete the data store then recreate it and format it with the 1mb vmfs5 block size

question:

right click data store, delete, recreate

or

follow instructions on kb 2004605 which states to unmount, then detach.

Hi,

Yes, you need to follow the Kb 2004605, so that it does not create APD situation on ESXI host, which can lead to unstable ESXi host.

Hello,

Instead of deleting the datastore, you can upgrade VMFS version to 55, on the fly, just use option upgrade VMFS. That should fix your issue.

I am wondering, why is the delete option there then?

The Unmount option will make sure that the Host does not see that as a datastore and it will says as unmount but you can again mount it.

Delete option is will delete the vmfs partition , so that you can again use that lun for any other filesystem.

Thank you all. I spoke to VMware support and they stated that right clicking and deleting the data store is ok to do.
