I am trying to delete a datastore but it keeps on saying something is using it but there is nothing on the datastore. How do i go about finding out what is trying to use it preventing me from deleting it?
Check that no ESX hosts have VMs running pointing to that
datastore.
I had one case, we found that one of the VMs had a CD attached to it with an
ISO pointing to that datastore.
As soon as CD was set to Client device and no pointing to ISO customer was
able to delete datastore completely.

the datastore has nothing on it, no iso or anything, it has never had an iso so nothing can point to it apart from a VM but all VMs have been migrated over and i would have thought that VMs would not start if they were pointing to a old datastore with nothing on it
You can try this:
If Datastore is on SAN, delete the LUN from SAN itselt and than rescan the Storage Adapters from vCenter.
Please Check whether you have assigned whole LUN to VMware or not... If not, than avoid using above step.
Thanks
