Datastore Utilization (80%) vs SAN Utilization

The general rule told is always under 80% utilization on a Datastore.  However, if I capped my utilization from the SAN itself, is there any reason to still stay under 80% utilization of a Datastore ?

Let's assume I am NOT using Thin Provisioning.

Example:

Let's say I have a 10TB Array on my SAN, and I then decide to only use 80% - 8TB.  I then create 8x1TB Datastores and present them to my Hosts.

Again, using Thick Provisioning only (Or maybe with some cautious thin provisioning), is there any reason why I can't essentially fill up the Datastores ?  I know there needs to be space for logs, snapshots if I plan to use them etc etc...but with all that in mind, is 80% still a relevant concern ?

Thanks

If snapshots and log files are something you are aware of, and you aren't doing thin provisioning of the VMs themselves, theres no reason to stop at 80%.

Thanks for the confirmation.

This is helpful for some planning I'm doing.
