Copying data from Virtual Machine Disk to Local disk is toooooo slow

We have recently implemented vMware visualization.   We have vSphere 5.5 and View 5.2 and done server & desktop visualization.

We have SAN as HP 3Par and Esxi hosts are HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8

Now while trying to copy data from the virtual machine disk to local machine disk is too slow. But if we are writing data from Local disk to virtual machine disk is normal. And copying data between two virtual machine's disk is also fast.

Thanks in advance for your help

Dear All,

Thanks for your help.

We were analyzing the issue in 360 degree and we have considered your inputs also. At last we found the issue. It was a faulty fiber link was creating the problem.

We have recently implemented vMware and this fault in fiber may also happened during this time. That is why we thought it may be because of vmware.

Thanks again for your helps

Do you think that it is because of Storage issue?  Or any configuration of Virtual machine?

We are new to vmware.

Hard to say without doing performance tests. From what you said, I'd take a closer look at the outgoing network traffic (VM -> local system) and also check the local systems's disk performance as well as processes like virus scan software (on access scan).

So you're copying data from a virtual machine to your physical desktop, and that's slow? Have you tried copying any other data to your physical desktop to compare the speed?

Typically a desktop will have a rather small amount of write buffer (typically a portion of memory) and cannot acknowledge the writes until they are actually written to disk (versus a cache or buffer). Obviously an enterprise SAN is going to have a significantly more powerful caching and writing system versus a desktop with just a single or few spinning disks. Smiley Happy

Thanks for your reply

The disk format is  Thick Provision Lazy Zeroed. But we have found the cause of the issue and it is solved as I mentioned in my post.  It was because of the faulty fiber splicing.
