Configure a snapshot percentage for a volume in SAN box

Hello All,

We use ESX 4.0 and a PowerEdge M610 as a blade server and Dell EQL Logic as the SAN storage.

We have created volumes which will be used as datastores for the VMs to reside.

In EQL Logic the snapshot of the volumes can be configured ( this is not a vm snapshot), this is the volume level snapshot.

We have configured initially as 100% snapshot size for the volume, which means if the volume is 500G , the snapshot reserve for that volume is also 500G.

Questions:

     1. How this snapshot will be used?

     2. What is the recommended practise to assign the snapshot percentage?

     3. Is there any guidelines I can look at?

Iam sure these might be at EQL logic level , but I was just wondering if anybody has configured these things in your environment.

Appreciate your time and response.

Prabs.

That is really difficult to answer as it depends on the usecase of the snapshot, the rate in which the data changes etc.
