Cluster Low Free Storage Alarm

Hi,

Is there a way to create an alarm in vCenter for low free datastore space across a cluster?

We are using the datastore free space alarm with a PowerCLI script to automate svMotion, but since automating our end-to-end server provisioning process are finding that datastores are being chewed up rapidly, often before any of the admins notice. We have a dedicated Storage team that generally doesn't provision disk on the spot - we need to give them several days notice - hence the need to be aware of the low space condition ahead of time.

I realise this can be done with PowerCLI, but would prefer a vCenter alarm in the first instance.

This might work only for thin provisioned storage:

Will this alarm (Disk Over Allocation) be useful to you.

In this article, it also mention a alarm call: Datastore Disk Usage.

Thanks for your response.

Forgot to mention we are currently only using thick disks. On first look the Datastore Disk Overallocation alarm won't do what we want, but just noticed the threshold can be set below 100%, so will check it out and let you know.

The Datastore Usage on Disk alarm is only for individual datastores, so not of any use in this case (other than to kickstart our svMotion script).

Found that the Datastore Disk Overallocation alarm is also targeted at individual datastores, so not what we need.
