Change VM Disk Mode whilst VM powered on.

Hi All,

Environment is ESXi 4.1 (latest updates/patches) and Virtual Machine is Hardware Version 7. Is there anyway I can change one of my Virtual Machine disks (VMDK) from non-independent to independent/persistant without having to shutdown the VM?

Hi Criag,

This setting is not in the hot-add feature for VM hardware 7. So in other words. You will not be able change the hard-drive format without shutting down the VM.

I did this in the past by using vmware-cmd. Highly unsupported of course but it did work:
