Adding storage to ESXi 4.1

Need help.

I've an ESXi with 2 VM running on 3 x 148GB HDDs RAID 5.

I'm running out of datastore space and to solve this problem I was told to buy 2 x 600GB HDDs and connect them as RAID 1.

My question is this:

How do I move the ESXi to the new RAID 1 ?

What do you people reccomend to do ?

Hi and welcome on community

Lets summarize:

You have standalone server and you running out of capacity on current RAID5 Direct Attached Storage (DAS), right ?

So, everything depends pretty much on what hardware do you have.

  • can you extend current Hardware configuration  ?
  • can you add second RAID controller ?

can you add 2 more disks without replacing old disks ?

Yes that's right,

  • the server is running on Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX300 S5
  • yes it is possible to add a second raid controller
  • yes I can add 2 more HDD without removing the old ones (6 slots available where 3 are used for the 148GB disks)

Hi

so, it that situation I would do:

  • Add 3x600GB and create a RAID5 (you don't waste a HDD solt)
  • Create a new VMFS datastore
  • depends on situation - I would either move VM from old datastore to new datastore or just add new VMDK to VM and place it to new datastore.
