Adding Windows NFS as datastore to ESXi 4.1

Hi

I am learning ESXi 4.1 and trying to create a good lab for my RnD.

The scenario is that I am using windows 7 64 bit as a Host machine. Two ESXi 4.1 VMs on it and wanted to try vMotion.

As vMotion needs a common shared storage ..I have created a 2003 32 bit enterprise VM and installed unix supplement to it for creating NFS share for the ESXi server as datastore. And trying to present nfs share created on it to ESXi server. But it is not getting success.Smiley Sad

Can anyone help me out?

Hello.

It will likely be much easier to use something like StarWind iSCSI SAN.  There is a trial available, and there are also many other solutions.

Good Luck!

Irrespective of NFS or iSCSI, you have to configure VMkernel gateway properly to use NFS or iSCSI.

Also enable Vmotion on the VMkernel port.

There are several virtual appliances available oin the appliance marketplace that you can use to provide both NFS and iSCSI storage for practice in your lab.

http://www.vmware.com/appliances/Have a look at Open Filer, probably the easiest of the lot to use.

You can import the IVFs to your ESX host and they will be availavle as NFS / iSCSI servers on your ESX host (which you can loop back to for storage excercises)

One day I will virtualise myself . . .

Thank you all for your helpful answers..

I am now using Openfiler and configured NFS for my Common Shared Storage.

And using it for storing VMs on it.:smileycool:

Thanks again for all your quick responses.Smiley Happy
