Adding 2TB RDM Fails

Hi guys,

I'm attempting to add a 2TB RDM to a VM. The VM resides on a datastore with 8MB blocks, and yet I'm still receiving the error:

"file [vmdk] is larger than the maximum size supported by datastore"

Adding the LUN as a virtual disk presents no problems.

Has anyone come across this problem before?

Thanks,

Grant

This can happen if the storage system creates the LUN with "real" 2 TB (2,048 GB). The maximum supported size is 2TB minus 512 Bytes. Try to create the LUN with e.g. 2,047 GB if possible.

Thanks Andre, seems logical now that you say it.

Will give that a shot.

Just in case:

If you are planning to add the LUN in virtual compatibility mode (e.g. to be able to create snapshots) the size limit is 2,032 GB. see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1012384
