4.09TB not working on ESXi 3.5 or 4.0

Hi,

I've problem with my Dell PE 2900 with 2pcs 160G disk (RAID-1) for the ESXi and 8pcs of 750G disk (RAID-5+0) for the VM machiines.

The ESXi can recognized the total capacity of 4.09TB (RAID-5+0) but it can only use the 92.74G.

Would any one help to fix this problem?

Thanks.

Both versions of ESXi have a LUN limit of 2.0 TB (2 TB - 512 B) so you would have to break the storage into smaller LUNs. With some RAID controllers you can create multiple arrays on the same disks and if you wanted just one large datastore across all 8 drives then you could do that with extents.

I suppose that you have the PERC 6 (or 5) controller.

With this controller you can create, inside a RAID definition, multiple Logical Volume.

Split you big one un 3 that are each smoller ther 2TB.

Hi Dave,

Dell technical staff told me that PERC 6i could only create one LUN when using RAID-50 or RAID60. That's why I've two smaller disk in RAID-1 for the OS.

I just learn from you that ESXi have a LUN limit of 2.0 TB (I could not found it from the web or from the manual),thank you for giving me that important information.

I'll re-config the RAID so that each LUN will be 2.0TB or less.

Thanks.

Hi Andre,

Thanks for your help but RAID-50 or RAID-60 in PERC 6i not allow to have more than one LUN (from Dell Technical staff).

Anyway, I'll reconfig the RAID so that each LUN will be 2.0TB or less.

Thanks.

Thanks, Troy.

If the imformation also included in the setup/install manual would be much better for those beginner, like me.

Thanks for your help but RAID-50 or RAID-60 in PERC 6i not allow to have more than one LUN (from Dell Technical staff).

Strange, but could be possible.

I'm only sure that on PERC 5/e you can have more the one RAID5 group.

Yes, you are right. In RAID-5, you can setup more than one LUN.

But not in RAID-50 or RAID-60 (for PERC 6i). That's why my original config for Windows 2003 have to install two smaller disks for the OS and the RAID-5+0 for GPT (GUID Partition Table) so that I can use all the available space.
