ESXi root password wrong

Hi everyone.

I have a server ESXi 6.5.0 Update 2 (Build 8294253). Everything was working ok, but just one day I log in with my root credentials and it says "Cannot complete login due to an incorrect user name or password", I don´t know what happens because it was ok. One day I could log in with root and I created a new admin user, I logged out again and again couldn´t enter with root. I entered with my new admin user and I changed de root password vía GUI and CLI and it says the change is ok, but when I want to log in wih root I got the same error, you know what happens?

Thank you!

On the ESXi shell just execute "pam_tally2" and you will see how many false login per user.

Iam pretty sure that in hostd.log or auth.log you can see from which IP the wrong logins are commig.

Do you have a 3rd. party monitoring, logging, automatization or $whatever script running which locks your root account?  If you try the wrong password 6 times or so the account will be locked for 900sec.

Hi, thank you.

I only have veeam B & R, I already configure ok veeam with the correct password and it works ok, after that I did what I mentioned but still the same error, it´s supose that if I changed the root password it has to work, or not?, but it can´t. or how can I reset that time that is blocked?

Thank you
